Abstract

THE FINAL CHORUS OF SOPHONISBA (1680) BY DANIEL CASPER VON LOHENSTEIN AND THE CONCEPT OF TRANSLATIO IMPERII Leopold I's Austria proclaimed itself to be the heir to the Roman empire, in accordance with the medieval doctrine of Translatio Imperii. Act V of Sophonisba (1680) by Daniel Casper Von Lohenstein and in particular the final chorus illustrate this imperial claim. The Silesian playwright was torn between the defence of the Protestants and provincial liberties and the necessary allegiance to the Habsburg monarchy. He took his subject from the Italian Renaissance, his political ideology from Spanish Jesuitism and his chorographical stagecraft from Viennese opera. Yet, this paradoxical inspiration hid the bitterness of the interconfessionnal battle in the Silesia of the XVII century.
